Fentiman’s

Thomas Fentiman, an iron worker from West Yorkshire, acquired a recipe for botanically brewed ginger beer in 1905 when a fellow tradesman approached Fentiman for a loan but never repaid it. The firm became a door-to-door ginger beer sales company. During the mid-1960s the company ran into trouble, as supermarkets were taking over the door-to-door trade, and closed down. In 1988, Eldon Robson, great-grandson of Fentiman, started the business again, relaunching the brand.

The original building of Fentimans is a listed building in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. The Fentimans logo, which is built into the building, is based on Fearless, Thomas Fentiman’s prize German Shepherd Dog, twice winner of the Crufts Obedience Test.

Fentiman’s recently came under negative media coverage after the sale of its Victorian Lemonade was banned for minors in Houlton, Maine. The label on the beverage states that it contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume, below the limit legislated for soft drinks in the UK. This is similar to the amount of alcohol in Sprite and equal to the amount in 7-Up. Despite a minor needing to consume 200 ounces of the beverage to equal the intoxication level of one beer, the beverage was still banned for sale to minors in the city.

Curiosity Cola
The term ‘newest drink’, Curiosity Cola, is somewhat of an oxymoron when considering Fentimans tradition. Colas originated from apothecaries and were heralded as elixirs with health enhancing properties. Legislation now prevents producers from making wondrous claims about the medicinal properties of their drinks, but believe our cola to be somewhat curious through the inclusion of Catuaba & Guarana extracts.

A stimulating recipe of ingredients? A full-bodied cola that is curiously invigorating? Curious to know more?

Victorian Lemonade
For real refreshment, pure lemon juice takes some beating. The stimulating combination of smooth botanicals and dry sharpness of the juice of one and half lemons in every bottle makes this an all-natural drink once tasted, never forgotten. Runner Up in the BBC Good Food Awards – it is everything you might imagine old-fashioned cloudy lemonade to be. Use as a mixer with Pimms, or by itself – it is real lemon-aid!

Seville Orange Jigger
A “jigger” is an old fashioned term for good measure. For the love of the two oranges, each bottle contains more than 30% of pure mandarin juice, enhanced with natural seville orange flavour. the consistency is just like fresh orange. Refreshing? – You decide!

Ginger Beer
Unlike other so called “Ginger Beers” our process starts with fermenting the finest chinese ginger root. This goes a long way to explaining the wonderful Ginger “Burn” that each bottle contains.
All natural and made in the time honoured tradition, using the finest Chinese Ginger Root, it is our best known product and enjoys a growing following around the world. If you like Ginger, you will love our Ginger Beer!

Dandelion and Burdock
What can be more evocative of tastes gone by than the classic Dandelion & Burdock and who better to bring it back to the shelves than Fentimans! Full strength infusions of Dandelion & Burdock create the unmistakable aroma and distinctive palate of this classic beverage.

Rose Lemonade
We sourced a pure rose Otto oil from the world-famous Rose Valley in Kazanlak, Bulgaria, which provides just the right degree of rose flavour and an appealing blush pink colour to the liquid. The rose extract is from a 100% pure and natural steam-distilled rose essential oil. When is comes to making a superior lemonade, full of flavour and goodness, shouldn’t it be smooth & subtle with a hint of rose?

Shandy
Premium Hops and malted barley are brewed and fermented for three weeks before the addition of natural lemon juice to create this smooth, full-bodied British soda that is 70% beer and 100% delicious. There’s no skimping here. Cheers!
